The Forestry and Rural Development Scheme managed by Highland Birchwoods was launched in August 2003. The Scheme provided £2.7m of European, Forestry Commision, SNH and LEC funding over 3 years for innovative projects in forest management for rural development.

Scope of the Scheme

The scheme planned to achieve its aims through three themes:

  • Theme 1: Adding value to timber products
  • Theme 2: Creating a diverse forest resource for the future
  • Theme 3: Community-based development through forest management

Eligible Applicants

Any forest owner or manager could apply for Theme 1 & 2 funding. Theme 3 was restricted to communities with an interest in woodland management, including non-profit distributing woodland groups, crofting townships/grazings committees, and other constituted local community organisations
